Advantages of Gravel Driveways

Gravel Driveway Midwest City Oklahoma

There are many advantages to gravel driveways for your Midwest City home or business that you should consider. It is the most cost-effective material to use for driveways, and especially long driveways that are often used for homes or businesses on an acre or more of land. The advantages of gravel driveways are worth some serious consideration for your home or business.

First, using gravel as the material for your driveway is the most cost-effective medium for your driveway installation. They usually have a low level of maintenance once installed, and there is no downtime to your home or business when the driveway is being installed.

Some customers like to use a gravel driveway as a stepping stone to an asphalt driveway at a later date. Gravel and asphalt can work perfectly together if asphalt may be a consideration later. Gravel driveways also have surprising longevity for the cost involved.

A properly-installed gravel driveway can last up to 10 years if it is reasonably maintained on a regular basis. Maximizing the longevity of your gravel driveway will depend on the slope of the driveway, and the integrity of the sub-grade and the typical weather conditions.

Comparing Gravel Driveway Materials

There are three main types of materials used for gravel roads and driveways that include crusher run, recycled concrete, and recycled asphalt pavement (RAP), also known as asphalt milling.

Crusher Run Gravel

Crusher Run stone is a quarried material that is crushed to particular sizes. It has the fines, or dirt, left in it which causes the stones to bind together which makes it the perfect driveway gravel. Even though gravel driveways cater to property owners who desire the lowest up-front cost, one can select from different materials to create unique color combinations and striking designs.

Crushed limestone, shale, gravel, pea gravel and granite are, all, options for gravel-driveway installation that will meet various aesthetic options.

Each type of gravel has its own distinct look; and each will compliment different styles of landscaping and architecture.  Additionally, different types of gravel offer varying degrees of strength and integrity.

The Gravel Driveway Installation Process

Properly preparing the base and layering the stones in a particular order for a gravel driveway is very important.  To ensure optimal performance, longevity and aesthetics, All Asphalt Paving & Concrete uses three stone layers on top of the soil; and each layer is tampered down with a mechanical roller or tamping machine.

Gravel Driveway Installation Steps Include

The first step is to remove the top layer of soil and other organic material until a hard surface is reached. When the grader reaches the layer beneath the topsoil, also known as the ‘hardpan’, then the base is graded and leveled. All Asphalt Paving & Concrete will grade the with a slightly higher center section to allow for proper drainage.

Some clients want extra protection form grass and weeds, and in these cases, we can add a layer of fabric or landscaping cloth. Many times, we will also add a weed barrier to the gravel mixture to help with weed control.

The first layer of gravel is a larger diameter stone, which can be 3 to 4 inches deep and consists of larger, four to five-inch stones for the first later. This is compacted with heavy rollers and then a smaller diameter of gravel that is about the size of a golf ball is added and rolled and compacted again. Finally, we add the crusher run, which is an angular gravel, that is mixed with stone dust and smaller pieces of rock that can create a cement like bond when compacted. The crusher run is also a 4-inch layer that is added before being compacted.

We then shape the final layer of crusher run before it is thoroughly compacted. The gravel driveway will have a crown that prevents water from puddling and promotes the proper drainage for that particular property.
